Natalie Merchant - Carnival

I love this video! and yes! I used to play it at the Cafe Iguana
I miss my job at Cafe Iguana, it was so much fun! also I had time to do what Natalie Merchant does on the video: just go around town and shoot some photographs (I miss Mexico too but the way). I love Black & White, I am so sad I don't have money right now to pay my entire apartment, now that I share it, I had to dismantle my small B&W lab :O(... maybe some day. Who knows what will destiny give to me?
Yes It is really 5:12 am and I am really working, well just finishing ;O)

love to compensate all my work with a little of fun... and what better fun that my own web blog!
by the way! this snow is giving me a flu! I live in first floor, that why, it's cheaper but it's the best apartment ever! I love it so much.

DEPECHE MODE RULES
MONTERREY CITY HERE I COMEEEEE!!!!!!

I'm going to take my time
I have all the time in the world
To make you mine
It is written in the stars above
The gods decree
You'll be right here by my side
Right next to me
You can run, but you cannot hide

Don't say you want me
Don't say you need me
Don't say you love me
It's understood
Don't say you're happy
Out there without me
I know you can't be
'cause it's no good

I'll be fine
I'll be waiting patiently
Till you see the signs
And come running to my open arms
When will you realise
Do we have to wait till our worlds collide
Open up your eyes
You can't turn back the tide

Don't say you want me
Don't say you need me
Don't say you love me
It's understood
Don't say you're happy
Out there without me
I know you can't be
'cause it's no good

I'm going to take my time
I have all the time in the world
To make you mine
It is written in the stars above

Don't say you want me
Don't say you need me
Don't say you love me
It's understood
Don't say you're happy
Out there without me
I know you can't be
'cause it's no good

FOBIA RULES

Fobia - El Diablo

it's FOBIA!!!
THE DEFINITIVE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK OF MY LIFE!!!!!!!
FOBIA RULES!!!!!!!
THE First time I heard his songs, I really dig them, it was just a pirate analog tape in the middle of the nineties in Mexico (Made at home or probably bought at the CHOPO MARKET),but my cousin play it for me to see my reaction without knowing who they were!! right choice for a musician!!! I just loved them! then after several months I saw a poster of them, but I was so hookep up with their music!
No matter if they become so old, like this video, where their parents play the instruments of theirs songs, I'll still be a true a true fan of their music! PERIOD!!!
it's SO MAGICAL! JUST AS SIMPLE AS THAT. IT ENCAPSULATES THE FEELING OF A GENERATION AS MINE!
THESE ARE THE THINGS I'LL MISS WHEN I'M DEAD. FOR SURE!!!!!!!!!

My birthday

Today is my birthday, and it entered with tons of works (it's 2:36 am and still working on the editing suite). VIFF 2006 is here and that's exciting news. I really really want to see Pedro Almodovar's Volver, but I don't know if I can make it :OS. For some reason I think the Opening Gala will be full before I can even buy a ticket.

Once again, a lot of movies to watch in so little time. This year I am working even more than last year. Which is a little bit annoying... but I had to put food over my humble table.
I saw the new Chabrol's film I think it was good but the ending was a little bit dissapointing. The Riddle was a great and fun movie to watch! highly recommended.

Mark agreed to work with me on the production company and that's a relief! but I really don't know if he really enjoy the job. Hopefully he will come back for the next work. Still I am worried. I was his camera assistant years ago. Great guy and definetly a great DOP.

Itinerante Productions Inc. started this year in Vancouver and already has clients, that's a good sign and good enough for now. El Kiosko is poorer but it is still too early. It is like a child for me, so forget it IT IS NOT COMING DOWN! A few years ago when I was driving my car and thinking over a beautiful brigde in Monterrey city (on my way home) I realize I had to study film and keep going with my life. Last year, I was driving over the same brigde with my very same car and thinking exactly the same, obviously the conclution was still the same... if I ever get sick or old there is no other way: I'll just keep walking, just keep going... I'll go as far as I can.

I am getting really sick because of all the work. But doesn't matter... I have to keep going. VIFF is here and at least I can enjoy watching movies and work to make a living on what I love.

VIFF 2006 PRESS CONFERENCE LOBBY

Lunch after the conference. Too bad I couldn't eat that much! :O( I had to leave early :O( it's not fair! too much work! :O(

3 Times

3 short stories where director Hou Hsiao Hsien explores the nature of love.
The first story “A time for love” deals about Chen (Chen Chang) who falls for a girl working on a pool just before enlisting on the Army; he comes back to the pool house just to find out she already quitted that job. Chen decides to find her.

The second story: “A time for freedom” happens on a 1911 China, and tells the story of a courtesan and her relationship with the owner of a plantation, while the last story entitled “A time for youth” is based on modern times and far more complicated than the other two stories: Jing (Qi Shu) is an epileptic singer, who is losing sight on her right eye, lives with her mother, grandmother and occasionally her girlfriend. But she already found someone else: Micky Zhen.

The movie is extremely visual, it doesn’t have too much dialogues and is beautifully shot. Framing and lighting are equally superb and a good example of good film language.

As I already said, “A time for youth” is the most interesting because even though modern times have more freedom, sometimes more freedom means more choices, and more choices leads to confusion.

For the 3 stories director Hsai Hsien chose the same couple giving a sense of unity.

About the movie, director Hou Hsai says: “Our lives are full of fragmentary memories. We can’t give them names, we can’t classify them and they have no great significance. But they lodge in the mind, somehow unshakeable”… “I used to love to play pool when I was young, and I have a memory fragment of the song “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” always playing in the pool-hall. Now I’m pushing sixty, and these things have been hanging around for so long it seems like they’re part of me… I think of them as the best of times”… “the best not because we can’t forget them, nor because thy’re things that have now been lost. The reason they’re the best is that they exist only in our memories. I have the feeling that this is not the last film I’ll make in this vein”.

The Sun

Director: Alexander Sokurov

(published in spanish language at Contacto Directo newspaper
Vancouver,BC)

Alexander Sokurov is one of the most intriguing and enigmatic filmmakers of contemporary cinema. Definitively “The sun” is a movie out of the ordinary, and also the third installment of a series of films where Sokurov analyses the theme of power seen through different points of view.

In “The Sun” Sokurov examines the persona of emperor Hirohito towards the end of Word War II. Just before he rejects his divine lineage descendant of the sun goddess, and assumes a position of a simple human being. Timing couldn’t be better, it is summer 1945 and something worst happens to Japan.

What for emperor Hirohito is a horrible nightmare, for us is an allegoric dream full of symbolism reminding us of the atomic bombs dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Hirohito sees on his dreams, a dantesque scene, a Japan devastated by war from the sky, with planes passing by, which at moments turn into fish, flying menacing over a Japan turned into rubble.

The sun is a slow movie for the average moviegoer already used to commercial films, but for the connoisseur, The Sun brings the opportunity to meet again at the big screen the author of “Mother and Sun”.

I discovered Sokurov a long time ago, back on my days when I was student in Mexico; on those days I was an avid and recurrent client of the Monterrey Cineteca, a cultural space created by the ministry of culture in Mexico, and I remember watching for the first time Sokuro’s movie: “Mother and Son” another enigmatic piece of this great director.

The sun is as intriguing as most of his films, some critics compare Sokurov’s films with Tarkovsky’s and I agree with that, but until certain level, Sokurov indeed has a style of his own and it is worth to take a look a this great film.
